Playtronica by Sasha Pas
Playtronica, the international studio of musicians, designers and engineers collaborated with Issey Miyake Perfumes for the launch of Rose&Rose and Wood&Wood. A match made in heaven for the collective’s work seemed perfectly tailored to Issey Miyake. Indeed, one needs only to watch L’Eau d’Issey and L’Eau D’Issey pour Homme chain reaction campaign video – a joyful and poetic ode to movement, nature and creation – to appreciate the organic symbiosis between Issey Miyake and Playtronica. We talked to Sasha Pas, founding member of Playtronica about the tactile sound installation he created for the Japanese creator.
A natural association
Issey Miyake gave us “carte blanche” so we could conceive the installation from A to Z starting with the original composition of the sound textures through the development of the musical drop by drop to the live performance. We wanted to transcribe as best as we could the origin of the Japanese brand during the presentation of their new perfumes. We used chain reactions videos, which revealed the journey between the organic objects (a drop of water, a piece of wood, a lemon) and the perfume. Starting from there, we wanted to translate the creation process through a sound narrative path starting with the drop of water then adding others organic components of the sound table.. To give voice to its minimalistic aromas, Issey Miyake inspired us to take just one instrument and one particular sound so that this whole installation acted as a natural musical organism. So when you smell the perfume, you immerse in time create stories in your mind or remember your past. You step away from linear and ordinary representations of reality, which are based solely on sight. We wanted technology to transform the perfumes into an unusual sensorial experience that would lead you to an endless variety of choices.
Music of a perfume
The tactile sound installation in Paris was inspired by Synesthesia, an unusual experience in which the perception of reality causes other sensations. Thus, a person can hear a sound by watching a colour, touching water or a wooden texture. Issey Miyake’s world is very pure, minimalistic and organic and we created a narrative audio path that resonated with his universe. Smelling a perfume is like listening to music, it needs our attention so we can perceive the whole “picture”. That’s why we decided to follow the path that leads to the scent creation with organic materials dear to Issey Miyake such as the wood and the blossoming rose. Finally we introduced a citrus taste, a bright yellow sensation to end the journey with the human touch. We brought all the essences composing the perfumes to life.
Profusion of sounds
I created Playtronica to broaden a fresh path for musical education. Build instruments from everyday life, invent a new type of performance and involve people into creative experiences. Our work has led us to be part of music festivals all around the world and we’ve performed in prestigious venues such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, The Exploratorium in San Francisco or the Tretyakov gallery in Moscow. Our goal is to remodel the synergy between the physical and digital worlds thanks to the power of sound and touch. We want to explore and arouse curiosity by using music, game and creative opportunities. We are also dedicated to the creation of interactive musical experiences. We want to offer powerful moments that go beyond common expectations. That’s why we work with many different materials to create a distinctive voice within these products’ universe. With a simple human touch, objects then turn into sounds.
